Anyone hear/read/know by osmosis a T.E. Arnold? Plane was from Britain.
I have what appears to be a very well made V-groove woodie stamped on the end and top with said name. Not a typical maker's mark, but a rather well done set of letter stamps.
A different name appears on the side. Plane and...
New to me in any case. A tad old in reality.
Won't get to honing the well shaped James Cam blade before the weekend...
Made by Wallace. The stamp on both the plane and iron are upside down, which I thought was sorta unusual.
Anyone with a copy of BPM?
Take care, Mike
This is a cross post from WoodNet...thought you might want to see.
Hi Y'all,
The latest issue of Woodworking Magazine has a simple trivet in it. Here's the link to the current issue. Scroll down for a [too] small graphic of the lead-in page...
In Chris Schwarz's blog when he wrote about the large Kenyon tenon saw I made him, he writes about the students' experience with it. He made the fun comment that because they were new to sawing tenons, they didn't realize that a 19" tenon saw was "freakishly huge."
I bought the saw below off of...
One of the spendy vintage plow planes one can find is an original 1882 Miller Patent Plough Planes.
Paul Hamler specializes in miniture reproductions, but also makes full size planes. Paul made a few hundred finished Miller plows and is offering 80 as "kits." I put "kits" in quotes because...
I mentioned in another thread [different forum?] I was selling off all my metal bench planes and going with woodies. Replacement wood planes have arrived over the last month or so and I will add a couple new ones and a couple I plan on making along traditional lines.
I recently received this...
I owe everyone an apology for allowing my bad couple weeks to interfere with posting winners to the OMG thread. I learned a lot from this experience. I should have engaged my brain before choosing to make the OMG thread into a guessing contest. I should have thought through actual rules and...
I'm, how do you say...Stuffed? That's good, yes?
I cannot believe what I found on my doorstep today.
Y'all have to wait to find out the details...But I love each and every item--yes, more than one!
Take care, Mike
off to feed the bears...
Here is the 28" rip saw I showed in progress a while back. Ready to ship off following a touch up on the teeth.
Panamanian Rosewood handle patterned after a JH Noble design. 5 ppi, heavy taper grinding to it. Progressive rake and fleam at the toe back to a nominal 4 degrees of rake and about 2...
We were having some discussions in the shop a little while ago. The topic became one concerning precision of work and speed of work.
My contention with the boys was the way to develop speed was through repetitive precision. Their contention was the way to become precise was through speed. That...
Hey Everyone.
Just thought I would post a new saw for us to make. Was fun to make...Our version of the Disston #8 half-back. 10 ppi cross cut.
Take care, Mike
back to work...
Well, a grandiose title for a simple three images and brief text...
I needed to make a handle pattern for some saws being made tomorrow. So I thought I would briefly illustrate the process I use.
First, a digital picture or a scan of the subject. Note that while I scanned the right side of the...
Recently, I was asked if I would make someone a pair of half-backs for his 8 year old son, 16" in blade length, one rip, the other cross cut. This person had also had me make him a half-back, along with the set of Kenyon saws. So we used the Kenyon saws as inspiration.
Here are the Father and...
Sorry Alf, couldn't resist...but your comment on WN helped me make a decision perhaps
A trio of saws, two No. 9s, one rip, one cross cut and a DT saw made from Imbuia that's got a bit of figure. These headed for a man in England as I write this.
Tis a wonderful smelling wood to work...
It's been a few weeks since I received the 1/4" chisel from Blue Spruce Toolworks.
I bought this to make squaring the mortises for the saw bolts easier due to the shape of the chisel. We have been using the heck out of the thing since then. It has held a wonderful edge, doesn't bind--the main...
With Alf's recent posting of the dire warnings concerning saws, I felt I should add something to the title to that affect...
Modeled after the Kenyon DT and carcass saws. German Beech handles, slotted brass backs. The DT saw is 16 ppi, 9" blade and the carcass saw is 11" and 14 ppi, both...
Here is a L/R pair of Japanese knives which Dave Burnard made for me--he's a neighbor and a very nice guy.
The have been hardened but not tempered. Extrmely hard, and try as I might when I was marking out some Lyptus for lap joints last week, I couldn't make them chip.
The small one in the...
Hi Y'all!
Got to hand deliever the below--wonderful host. Had a bear and some pizza and got a tour of a shop to die for. These are his new additions.
Enjoy, Mike
Now that the saw is in the owner's hands...
Here's the Kenyon panel saw--26"--as found in the Seaton chest and replicated to the best we could do with the extant photos I have.
26" blade, 7 ppi cross cut. European Beech handle.
This saw, while looking big--and with a .042" saw plate that has...
Just bought this piece of European Beech and gotta share...and why? Because this stuff is one of the hardest to get woods here in the US, at least on this side of the US.
It's 2 1/8" thick, 22 1/2" to 24 1/4" wide and 98" long. Quarter sawn, of course.
Take care, Mike
