    Joke Thread II

Reminds me of the old Spike Milligan poem :- "The sky has holes where the rain comes in. The holes are small, which is why rain is thin"

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been away and not checking this forum. The long and short of it is that I never got around to it! Other priorities arose in spring, and during the summer temperatures are too high to do a decent job on a large area when working on my own...

    Making beaded face frames

I cut the notch with a 45deg mortar groove cutter on the router table, and then cut the bead afterwards with a 6mm bead cutter on the router table. It's quick and consistent, and if you have a router table you just need to buy the two cutters.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Built this booze unit for my nephew and his wife to their spec. Birch ply carcase, oak veneered back and bar top, and beech and mdf doors.

    Tier 4

This all reminds me of one of Bernard Wooley's irregular verbs (from "Yes Prime Minister"). He breaks the law, You bend the rules, I exercise discretion.

    Best finish for table tops?

I'm surprised at your experience with Osmo Top and Polyx Oil Mike. I've used it for table tops and other furniture, and have found it to be virtually bomb proof on oak, cherry and maple. Can't speak for pine though. The great thing with any of the Osmo oils is that if you get some localised...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

Nearly 12 months on, so time for another update. The top row, Sadolin Ultra, is wearing well, although there are slight signs of deterioration on the English Oak (second column). The second row, Sadolin Classic, is showing signs of deterioration on all woods. The third row, Sikkens Filter...

External iroko - Osmo UV Oil or Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus

It's 2 1/2 years since this was last reviewed, and over 8 years since it was started, and any finish left in full sun for that time will be showing severe deterioration by now. Only the Sikkens shows any signs of giving continued protection. The Osmo UV Oil has all but disappeared. The...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Following the help offered here, I contacted F Ball tech dept and what a helpful guy I found! In his opinion, whilst Stopgap 800 would be the Rolls Royce solution, it is not cheap, and is designed for factory and commercial warehouse applications so probably overkill for a domestic workshop. He...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Thanks Neil. I'm in the middle of refitting the bathroom at the moment so it will have to wait a week or two. But it's definitely a project for some time this summer. Back in the winter, I wanted to move my planer thicknesser to a position where I could feed long pieces of stock through it...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Jim - you are an absolute star! I was thinking only leave the dam in place until the mix has started to set sufficiently to hold its shape, and then remove it and pour the next batch to help with bonding along the edge. I'm not bothered about the shape of the bays being visible so long as I...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Thanks. Nice to hear from someone with practical experience. F Ball & Co Stopgap 1200 Pro or Stopgap 800 Wearcoat look like the best products from their range for this type of application. However, I have about 30 sq m to do, and only me and my wife to do it. Time is not money for us, so is...

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

Those were my thoughts too Max. Favourite at the moment is to level it with Mapei Ultra 1210 and then to cover it with floor grade interlocking chipboard (about £200) or interlocking plastic tiles - but that would be close to £1,000 :(

Self levelling compound on a tamped concrete garage floor

I'm contemplating grasping the nettle and to try to put a smooth surface on an existing tamped concrete floor in my garage. The garage is attached to our house, has a damp course and I also think there will be a damp proof membrane under the floor slab as I have no issues with damp. The main...

    Replacement composite deck

Thanks Pete. It just needs an occasional hosing down and sweep to keep it clear of bird rubbish etc. Anecdotally its colours don't fade noticeably over time, it doesn't get slippery when wet like wooden decking and it doesn't get brittle after prolonged exposure to UV. We'll see! Sent from my...

Inset brush seal for bifold door - can anyone identify?

Sadly the guys who did the bifold doors in my daughter's new home were not up to the job and I am trying to sort. Amongst other problems one of the brush seals in the underside of one of the doors has slid out of place and been mangled as the door closed. The builder/installer is not...

    Replacement composite deck

You know when you’ve lived in the same house for a long time when stuff you originally did has to be replaced. We installed a deck out the front of our home in 2008, and it was even the subject of a write-up on this very forum. I was happy with the result at the time … … but by the...

    Spiral router cutters

Wot the others said! Brilliant service. For spiral cutters I've only used their 3mm and 6mm downwards spiral cutters for an exceptionally clean cut for inlying a string. They are always my first stop and only consider others if they are out of stock or don't have what I want.

    Kitchen Island

Thanks. The mixer lift is the Hafele Mixer Lift 504.22.421 I got mine here as that was the best price around at the time. It comes without the springs fitted. They are powerful and a right PITA to lever onto the steel frame!
