    The manual states - Lubricate with a 30-40 grade lubricating oil or if this is not available a good quality motor oil SAE 10W-40 is a suitable alternative. I've started a private conversation with you

    Drive belt in good condition? Do the points on the drive & live centre line up? Other than that it may be the piece of wood. Can you try another piece?

    Blister, you have misunderstood. The message was from the Robert Sorby forum not ukworkshop. It's fairly standard to have to log in to a forum to use it's facilities rather than just read the posts.

    I would say that 180 grit is very fine, 120 grit fine, 80 grit medium & 40/60 grit coarse, but it's subjective. If you have a higher grit than 180 you are getting into extremely fine territory. Again, in my opinion, you don't need much above 120 grit for wood turning tools.
