Decent device manufacturers use intelligent charging systems. The number of scare stories I get from Apple haters about devices blowing up is, in 99% of cases, people using cheap Chinese knock off chargers and leads. To Apple's credit if there is any sort of problems there's usually a recall...
If you come across a flint in old brickwork (and you will know when you have) putting a steel punch in the hole and giving a hefty whack (or two) to shatter it, usually works. Also with old walls I never start with the hammer on..... ask me how I know😂

Yeah my battery charger won't sense a totally dead battery. Another way to get it to kick into life is to get a 9V PP3 (MN1604) and wire it across the terminals with the charger clips in place and it springs into life, obviously remove the PP3 😀
